Designing Your Cutting Garden

March 14

The Cutting Garden Series

A thoughtful cutting garden begins with good planning. In this early-season session, we’ll look at how to design a small but productive garden focused on flowers for cutting and arranging.

Together we’ll walk through the beds and greenhouse, discussing how we choose varieties for colour, stem length, and succession through the season. We’ll cover seed starting, bed layout, spacing, and the simple systems that help keep a cutting garden manageable and abundant.

You’ll leave with practical ideas for planning your own space — whether that’s a few garden beds, a dedicated cutting patch, or a larger home garden.

This class takes place partly indoors and partly in the garden, with time for questions and discussion.

Spring Planting & Early Crops

April 25

The Cutting Garden Series

Spring is when the cutting garden truly begins to take shape. In this class we’ll focus on planting hardy annuals and early crops that set the foundation for the season ahead.

We’ll walk through the garden together, looking closely at spacing, planting techniques, and succession strategies that help flowers keep producing through the summer. You’ll learn how to establish strong plants early in the season and how small adjustments in planting timing can make a big difference later on.

We’ll also discuss some of the most reliable flowers for cutting gardens in our climate and how to combine them for a steady supply of stems.

This session includes time working directly in the garden and observing what’s growing on the farm.

Summer Harvest & Flower Care

August 6

The Cutting Garden Series

Harvesting flowers well is one of the most important skills in a cutting garden. In this summer session we’ll focus on how and when to harvest flowers for the longest vase life and healthiest plants.

Together we’ll walk through the garden identifying stems at the right stage for cutting, and discuss conditioning techniques that help flowers last longer once they’re brought indoors. We’ll also look at simple ways to keep plants productive through the height of the season, including pruning, harvesting frequency, and garden care during warm weather.

This class is especially helpful for anyone hoping to bring armfuls of flowers indoors throughout the summer.

Saving Seed & Planning Ahead

October 10

The Cutting Garden Series

As the season begins to slow, the garden offers a chance to reflect and prepare for the year ahead. In this final class we’ll look at how to collect and store seed from favourite varieties, and how to evaluate what worked well in the garden over the season.

We’ll walk through the beds together, identifying plants that are good candidates for seed saving and discussing simple techniques for drying and storing seed successfully. We’ll also talk about preparing beds for winter and making notes for next year’s planting plans.

This session offers a gentle close to the season — a chance to look back on the garden and begin imagining the next one.
